When Big Brother Naija Returns, Remember Your Values

“As e dey hot” is the philosophy which a modern-day Nigerian has adopted in his daily life. Simply put, it means jumping into the band wagon of whatever is in vogue. Little wonder two groups/sects at war with each other can suspend an ongoing battle to enjoy a game of football when the National team is in action only to lock horns after the match has been completed (just like at the last concluded FIFA World cup).

What is even most surprising is that members of both groups could actually support the same team in a temporary spirit of friendship and unity not minding their differences while the game is ongoing.

A similar effect was generated by the just concluded Big Brother Naija show. A reality TV show in which a handful of youths are selected to participate as housemates with a chance of winning a huge sum of money as reward while also gaining publicity and fame needed to push their brand (if they have any).

This show has been aired over the years, but the just concluded edition almost put the whole country on stand-still. It seemed as though everyone (almost everyone) has jumped into to the band wagon “as e dey hot”. Unlike the football games/tournaments that are known to foster temporal unity among foes, the Big Brother show is one that is intrinsically evil and characterized by well know vices.

The Big Brother show encourages people to “just be themselves and play their game”. Win voters’ hearts and you could become wealthy

The most primary vice at the heart of the Big Brother show is that of FALSE AMBITION. Young men and ladies from different works of life are gathered together to participate in a months-long show in which they stand a chance of winning millions by doing absolutely nothing in particular. Housemates stay together day after day without doing anything that is particularly productive: no jobs, no trades.

Instead, they serve as entertainment to viewers but cannot serve as sustainable means of livelihood or as a source of income.

The Big Brother show encourages people to “just be themselves and play their game”. Win voters’ hearts and you could become wealthy. A lot of youths are now hopeful of finding a way into the Big Brother house in order to win free millions of Naira or at least get the fame and recognition they desire.

Co-habitation is next on the list of vices. One of the effects of watching the Big Brother show can be seen in the ease with which viewers become conformed to the idea of having men and women living together under the same roof with no form of segregation. This co-habitation is at the root of the grave immorality that is freely displayed by the show. There is an implicit promotion of sexual immorality and nudity that has become one of the selling points of the show. Take this away and viewership would go down by at least half.

If no one watches and discusses the Big Brother show, such that there is no viewership, no followership and no hype around it, the show would be closed down and all the associated vices would be put to stop

Reveling: a sin strongly condemned by St. Paul in his letter to the Galatians (Gal 5:21). Parties are staged on a weekly basis with lots of alcohol, loud music, dancing and freedom of expression. Every interested viewer looks forward to the next house party as a major means of entertainment. Needless to say, housemates can get drunk on weekly basis with a chance to sleep right next to the opposite sex after the party is over.

Immodest dressing and vulgar language are just a few of other common placed vices in the Big Brother house. Also, the chance that a Christian can stay one, two or even three months without assisting at Holy Mass because he is participating in the Big Brother show is something being overlooked when the Big Brother show is being discussed.

Let’s turn our attention to the Big brother housemates. Housemates are selected from amongst people that have tendencies to feel comfortable with the vices expected of the show. And of course, they never fail to deliver a show in their quest to win the apportioned millions.

In summary, the Big Brother show is a reality show which takes housemates away from reality. With the promise of fame, the thrill creates an atmosphere of false ambition while placing them in a house that has been engineered to get housemates express various forms of immorality, impurity and immodesty. Their souls are taken far away from the sanity and joy that comes from worshipping their Maker.

But one can choose to say “I am an innocent viewer; I don’t participate in all the vices already mentioned and I don’t have the intention of ever making it into the Big Brother house. I just watch it on TV and I don’t watch the immoral parts of the show, I just like the games and tasks. I only watch the highlights of what happens in the Big Brother house online”.

It is pertinent to note that if no one watches and discusses the Big Brother show, such that there is no viewership, no followership and no hype around it, the show would be closed down and all the associated vices would be put to stop. It is good for all to know that paying satellite TV subscription fee to watch the show and voting for housemates both serve as a major source of revenue stream for the Big Brother show.

For our enemy, the devil is going round like a roaring lion looking for who to devour, stand up to him in faith

So, getting involved in any of these is a means of contributing directly to sponsor the show and indirectly to the prize money of the winner. For those who look up the show on the internet or find other means to watch or discuss the show, you are contributing to the hype and popularity of the show. Visiting the website draws traffic to the site which translates to revenue, thereby financing the show.

As Christians, we are to flee from all immorality. Our inability to do so with regard to the Big Brother show means we are directly or indirectly financing and upholding these vices propagated through the television to our society.

penitence

I recommend a serious examination of conscience for everyone who has in one way or the other, directly or indirectly participated in the vices propagated by this immoral reality show. Immediate confession and counselling from one’s confessor would go a long way in kickstarting your reparation to Our Lord for participating in such immorality.

I would urge us all to free from all forms of immorality, promote modesty and decency and never grow tired of doing what is right. For our enemy, the devil is going round like a roaring lion looking for who to devour, stand up to him in faith (I Pet 5: 8-9).

Say no to the Big Brother Naija show; do not even engage in discussions regarding the show. Ultimately, do away with your television. It is your window to the evil world.
